Breast Implant Revision

Many individuals pursue breast augmentation to achieve their desired bust size and shape. While breast implants often produce satisfactory results, there are times when a patient may desire or require changes to their implants. Breast revision surgery can exchange/upgrade current breast implants, address implant complications, improve results from a previous augmentation, and ultimately help many patients achieve the look they desire.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Gene Sloan, MD at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is committed to helping patients understand their options when it comes to breast enhancement and revision surgeries. He recognizes that the reasoning for pursuing breast revision is a personal one and takes the time to understand a patient’s individual needs and aesthetic goals. Dr. Sloan is highly skilled at performing a variety of breast surgeries and aims to create a safe and welcoming environment for his patients.

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast revision is a surgical procedure designed to help patients achieve their desired breast appearance. The surgery can improve breast contours, increase or decrease size, enhance shape, exchange the type of implants placed, address complications that may have arisen, and revise undesirable results from a previous breast augmentation. Patients may wish to change out their current breast implants, completely remove their implants, or combine the procedure with a breast lift.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

Typically, candidates for breast implant revision surgery are individuals in relatively good health with realistic expectations for what the procedure can accomplish. There are multiple reasons why a patient may choose to pursue implant revision, including:

  • The desire to replace current implants with ones of a different size, shape, or type
  • The need to correct unsatisfactory breast augmentation results
  • The desire to remove the breast implants altogether
  • The presence of implant-related complications, such as an implant rupture, capsular contracture, or malposition

What Does Breast Implant Revision Involve?

For a breast revision procedure, Dr. Sloan will typically utilize an incision below the breast as it is the most versatile for correcting problems that may be encountered. The treatment is frequently performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient, so patients are able to go home the same day.

The most common types of revision surgery are breast implant exchange and breast implant removal. Implant exchange involves the removal of a patient’s current implants followed by replacement with new implants to achieve a different size or shape. Additionally, some patients may wish to exchange the type of their implants from saline to silicone or vice-versa. If a patient decides they simply no longer want implants, then breast implant removal can be performed. Dr. Sloan can discuss all options during the consultation and help determine the most ideal treatment plan for each patient’s needs and goals.

What Can I Expect After Breast Implant Revision?

Recovery time following breast implant revision is variable among patients depending on the particulars of the treatment plan and their own unique healing response. The team at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery will provide patients with detailed post-operative instructions to promote a safe recovery. Many patients experience a degree of tenderness, bruising, and swelling that eventually subside, and can often return to work after a week or two. It is recommended that patients avoid rigorous activities for a few weeks to heal safely.

Results following implant revision will be influenced by the type of surgery performed. If breast implants are removed altogether, there may be a level of sagginess due to the skin no longer having to stretch over the implants. If a breast lift is subsequently performed, the skin can be tightened and the breasts can be elevated.

How Much Does Breast Implant Revision Cost?

The cost of breast revision surgery can vary widely from patient to patient depending on individual treatment plans. Depending on the problem, surgery may last anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours or more. Cost varies accordingly. For problems such as rupture or capsular contracture, there may be warranty coverage available from the manufacturer. Our experienced staff will help you maximize this coverage. Factors that may contribute to the cost of breast implant revision include:

  • Whether the procedure is performed in conjunction with a breast lift
  • Whether the breast implants are being exchanged with new implants
  • Anesthesia and surgeon’s fees
  • Prescribed pain medication
  • Post-operative garments
  • Use of GalaFlex® mesh

At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we offer third-party financing options for qualified applicants to make payment easier and more manageable. Once the customized treatment plan is developed, a member of our team can calculate a total cost estimate and answer any questions about payment options.
